Why the Site?

by ryan | Jan. 12, 2023

Brothers are always trying to show one another up, right? My brother recently create a google site. Took him about 20 min, I think. He was shocked, when I told him I was making this site and that I was trying to build it from the ground up and probably has taken me 20+ hours (in other words, 60 times the amount of time that he spent).

This post is to attempt to explain the "why" behind creating this site (this is mostly so I don't feel bad about all the time I've lost), and is divided into the following sections:

The Spark 🔥

Simply put, I was inspired by this blog post by Rachel Thomas from fast.ai. From reading it, I felt I had nothing to lose and much to gain from blogging.

Reason 1: to log

Since returning from Japan, I feel the rate at which I'm learning (or at least consuming information) is alarming and ever increasing! I feel like a filled sponge attempting to absorb more and more everyday without enough time to dry out.

I'm sure many others, maybe even you, feel this way or have felt this way and have their own solutions, but part of my solution is this blog. I'm hoping that this turns into a place where I can do some of the following:

  • Organized, summarize, document what I’m learning
  • Gather links to good resources I find
  • Leave a record / organize my thoughts (for looking back on hopefully without too much cringing 😬 )

Reason 2: to sharpen & showcase

Besides having this record, my goal is to turn this into a place where I can sharpen my skills and show it to others (not just show my brother how cool I am becoming, but also for potential coworkers/employers to see what I'm working on, how I work, and what are my strengths and weaknesses). With this, I plan on writing about projects I'm working on, as well as showcase some of my technical chops.

Reason 3: to help

I hope that this site might help others too. I've greatly benefited from blog posts from a variety of people (professors, software engineers, data scientists). In fact, I would not have been able to learn the skills needed to build this blog if it wasn't for great blogs and tutorials. So, whether it be through sharing experiences, creating technical tutorials/courses, or just having a link to a useful resources, my hope is that someday someone can benefit from this website.
